A group of Prince George Figure Skating Club skaters are taking their elements and routines south to Williams Lake this weekend.

Fourteen skaters are competing in the Cariboo North Central Regional Competition Jan. 24-26, as part of CanSkate's Star Skate stream.

"We're excited to have this number of kids going," said coach Courtney Iswaskow during a training session Monday. "Everyone has trained really hard. They did simulations on Thursday [Jan. 16] and they all look ready and good to go."

The PGFSC contingent includes skaters who'll compete in the Star 2 category all the way up to the Senior Bronze level.

The Star 2 category, (the youngest Prince George skater is seven years-old), involves a 90-second solo program with two spins, five jumps and one spiral element.

The Senior Bronze level, (the oldest Prince George skater is 15), involves a 2.5-minute more interpretive program with six jumps (doubles and singles), more difficult spins and footwork.

All in all, PGFSC skaters will compete in 25 events.

"They're all trying harder jumps and spin variations for all the points," Iwaskow said. "Their stamina and basic skating skills have improved since September. Each skater has their own set of goals and all they want personal bests."

Those competing are: Katelyn Ginter and Alayna Cook in Star 2; Hannah Levine and Cassidy Campbell in Star 3; Miranda Anderson, Emma McCarville, and Abigayle Mantua in Star 4; Mariah Baker, Alexa Petterson, Kaela Johnston, Marissa Mccarville, and Holly Burke in Star 5; Olivia Jenaway in Senior Bronze ladies and Ariana Mantua in pre-introductory interpretive.

The Prince George Figure Skating Club has witnessed its enrolment triple this season to 282 skaters, which also includes its power skaters.

It's not too late to enrol in skating lessons. There are eight weeks left in the CanSkate program and another three-week session starts in April.
