PGFC Subway got toasted by the Heat.
The local women's all-star soccer team fell 3-0 to the host Heat in Monday's championship game of the Kamloops Invitational. PGFC had beaten the Heat for gold the previous two years but was up against a talent-rich and fully-stocked club this time around. Thirteen members came from the Thompson Rivers University program and three more were Simon Fraser University products.
"They were motivated to seek some revenge and they were ready," said PGFC coach Frank Rossi, who was working the sidelines with Mato Mikic. "Their team was as strong as I've ever seen it."
PGFC was down 1-0 with about 20 minutes left to play and had a glorious chance to even the score when Jessica Erickson charged in on a partial breakaway. Unfortunately, her shot hit the post and the Heat came right back down the field and scored an insurance marker. With Prince George pushing for a goal in the final moments, the Heat added one more for the margin of victory.
To start the tournament, PGFC beat the Kamloops Stainer Selects 4-1 on goals by Holly Miller (2), Erickson and Julie Martin. Next, PGFC got a marker from Katie Spencer and rode it to a 1-0 win against Medicine Hat. To get to the final, Prince George went to penalty kicks against North Shore and prevailed 2-1. Shootout goals came from Spencer, Tianna Pius, Jodi Godwin and Corey Rossi.
Four of the PGFC starters were 17-year-olds. By the time the club reached the final, it was down to one sub because of illness, injuries and scheduling conflicts.
