Kayla Gordon, a student at Cedars Christian school has been selected to try out for the national Cadette (under 16) basketball team.

Basketball BC will will provide financial support to Gordon, locally, and eight others, provincially, as they attempt to make the national squads.

Basketball BC President John Buis said, "we are very proud that these British Columbia athletes have been selected to the try-out camps for two very important national teams. Basketball BC athletes have a long record of accomplishments at the national team level and we look forward to more in the future.

Executive Director Lawrie Johns noted "we are able to financially support these athletes with the assistance of funding received from the provincial government through 2010 Legacies Now and the Targeted Sport Strategy program. This financial support is crucial to allow BC athletes the opportunity to be part of a national-high performance program."

Basketball BC's high performance manager Ross Tomlinson said, "these athletes have been identified through our Elite Development Program, they have had excellent coaching in their high school programs and some have also been involved in their local club programs. We look forward to these women attending the try-out camps, returning to continue with our provincial elite team program and, of course, joining the national teams if selected."

The Cadette national team will compete in Mexico June13 to 18, 2011 at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
