Local players Corey Cunningham and Jayce Schweizer were part of the gold-medal-winning club at the recent National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Membertou, N.S.
Cunningham and Schweizer were members of Team B.C., which defeated Team Saskatchewan 6-5 in overtime in the final, played May 12. In the game, B.C. trailed 3-0 after the first period but fought back to send the contest into extra time. Dylan Devers of Chilliwack scored the tying goal with 0.1 of a second left on the clock. Devers continued with the heroics in overtime, as he notched the winner in the early stages of the fourth period.
In the semifinals, B.C. knocked off the 2017 champion, Team Manitoba, 4-3.
Team B.C.'s head coach was former NHL goaltender Dwayne Roloson.
The female version of Team B.C. featured five Prince George players - Jordan McMillan, Nancy Moore, Camryn Scully, Tessa Sturgeon and Tashyla Teschuk - as well as Smithers product Wynona Creyke. There was also local content on the coaching staff in the form of head coach Justin Fillion and assistant coach Dayle Poulin. The team manager, meanwhile, was P.G.'s Jocelyn Marren.
B.C. placed fourth after a 2-1 overtime loss to Team Manitoba in the bronze-medal game.
