Raphael Encinas and Asher Young led the way with gold medals for the North Capital Judo Club at the Edmonton International Open on the weekend.
Competing on the mats at the Ice Palace at West Edmonton Mall, Encinas sparred to gold in the under-26 kilogram class for under-10 boys, while Young grabbed the gold in the under-33kg division in U12 boys.
Young and Encinas were among nine NCJ athletes who competed at the Edmonton International.
Aiden Crocetta battled to the silver medal in the under-36kg U12 boys division, while Lochlan Young earned silver in the under-50kg U14 boys class.
Miles Wood won his bronze medal match in the under-42kg U12 boys division, while Nicolas Richards won his under-66kg U16 juvenile boys match to also pick up the bronze medal.
Maxwell Young earned a fifth-place finish in the under-46kg U16 juvenile boys, while his dad Shawn placed fifth in the veteran men (ages 40-45) under-73kg division.
Braeden Davis went 0-2 in his under-66 kg U18 cadet men division.
The Hart Judo Academy sent 30 athletes to Edmonton.
Koen Heitman won gold in the under-46kg U14 boys class, while five HJA athletes grabbed silver medals.
They include Alex Ribeiro in under-66 kg U14 boys, Brooke Corbett in under-40 kg U16 girls, Grace Northrop in under-52 kg U18 girls, Brendan Bellavance in under-100 kg U21 men, and Lavanna Laass under-63 kg U21 women and senior women divisions.
Winning bronze medals were Christopher Cormack in under-60kg U14 boys, Christopher Nelson in under-50kg U14 boys, Matthias Schenk in under-42kg U14 boys, Kurtis Cormack in under-60 kg U16 boys, and Kimiko Kamstra under -48 kg U16 girls.
Four athletes from the Prince George Judo Club medalled in Edmonton.
Branden Edwards won his under-60kg U16 match for gold, while Quinn Clemas won silver in under-90 senior men.
Sydney Edgson sparred to the bronze medal in under-44kg U14 girls, while Ryan Russell battled to bronze in under-55 U16 boys.
Taylor Schaus (under-46kg) and Kyle Wilkinson (under-66kg) competed in the U18 boys division.
