P.G. Judokas bring home medals

Several members of the North Capital Judo Club and Hart Judo Academy took part in the B.C. Championships in Abbotsford on Saturday. The judokas from North Capital won three gold and one bronze medals.

Several members of the North Capital Judo Club and Hart Judo Academy took part in the B.C. Championships in Abbotsford on Saturday.

The judokas from North Capital won three gold and one bronze medals.

Gabe Sakamoto (boys under-10, -22 kilograms), Maxwell Young (boys under-14, -38 kilograms) and Shawn Young (senior men's intermediate, -73 kilograms) won the gold, while Nicolas Richards (under-16 juvenile men, -60 kilogram) won the bronze.

Other competitors from North Capital were Gregory Law who finished with a 1-2 record in the under-18 cadet men, -60 kilogram division, Trevor Sakamoto (0-2) in the senior men's intermediate, -73 kilogram division and Atley Miller (0-2) in the senior men, +100 kilogram division.

The Hart Judo Academy sent three athletes to Abbotsford where Gabriel Paterson placed second and Kimiko Kamstra and Isaac Kamstra were third and fourth, respectively.

This weekend, the Zone 8 judo playdowns will be held at the Northern Sport Centre. Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. and goes to noon on Saturday. There will be a regional practice for all the judo clubs in the afternoon.

There are about 20 athletes trying out for a spot on the Zone 8 judo team, including North Capital athletes Gregory Law and Nicolas Richards.
