Jonah Brittons met his goal at the 2012 Western Canadian Amateur Motosports Championship.
The 12-year-old placed first in the 85cc 7-11 category at the Raymond, Alta., event last weekend by taking care of the basics.
"Skill, manning up and getting on the gas and clearing stuff that [other riders] weren't," said Brittons about his strategy.
The victory came with an automatic berth in the Canadian motosports championship this summer in Walton, Ont., but Brittons won't be able to take advantage of the opportunity.
"I really want to go because I think I could come top three, that would be an amazing accomplishment," said Brittons. "Maybe next year."
In his three races in Raymond, the Prince George rider improved from third to second to first in the 85cc 7-11 class. He said the third-place finish on Day 1 was a result of starting in the 20th spot and messing up his knee earlier in the day during the super mini moto.
After a second-place finish on Day 2, Brittons was in a tight battle with Josh Duerksen of Wainwright, Alta., in his final 85cc moto of the June 27-30 competition.
"We were battling it out, unfortunately he went over the bars," said Brittons. "He was OK and got back up, but I sailed to victory.
"I got stronger and more used to the track and the terrain," he said about his consistent improvement. "It's a really fun track though once you're used to riding the terrain. You've got to stay focused otherwise you're going to wipeout."
Prince George rider Jake Jose finished third behind Brittons and Duerksen in the 85cc and was sixth in the super mini moto.
Other Prince George riders also found success at the motocross championship. In the intermediate class Cole Bernier was sixth, fifth and second in his three races.
In the school boy moto it was a one-two finish for Prince George with Landon Nelson crossing the finish line ahead of Jess Pettis. In the super mini class Pettis earned his own victory lap while Nelson was third. Warren Constantine of Fort St. James placed second in the super mini while winning the 85cc 12-17 category. In the ladies A moto, Sarah King of Fort St. James placed second and in the junior B event she was 10th.
Brittons said his next focus is on the BC provincial championship, Labour Day weekend at the Whispering Pines Raceway in Kamloops, but he already has a new goal for the 2013 Western Canadian championship.
"It's my goal to go to Raymond and win the super mini," he said.
