When Reid Powers found out she was going to Hollywood, she wasn't thinking American Idol.
What did come to mind was the Hollywood Classic gymnastics meet in Calgary.
While she was there last weekend, the Prince George Gymnastics Club member made a big impression on the judges, winning the all-around Level 2 novice title by finishing first on the beam, second on bars and floor exercise and eighth in vault. Powers will now make the leap up to Level 3 novice, starting with the Kelowna meet in June.
Level 2 open gymnast Erica Hirtz was also on top of her game, placing first on uneven bars and balance beam and second in floor exercise, for a first-overall placing. Hirtz has now advanced to the Level 3 open category.
The Prince George Level 2 team of Powers, Hirtz and Aly Muir won the team event.
In one of her first meets competing in the Level 3 tyro class, Bronwyn Ellington wrapped up a fourth-overall finish after placing third in floor, and fifth in vault, bars and beam.
Anna MacDonald wrapped up a podium finish, finishing third all-around in Level 3 novice after placing second in the vault, third in beam and fifth on bars, while Mekenna Parker ended up seventh all-around after fourth-place results on the vault. She was eighth on bars.
Rhiana Palfy earned Level 3 novice gold on bars and silver for her floor routine.
In the Level 3 open event, Miranda Doerksen was seventh overall, placing second on bars, third on vault, and fifth in the floor event. Clubmate Jaymie Hinks was fifth on floor and seventh on vault.
It was also a memorable weekend for Milan Knight, tops in the Level 5 open overall standings after first-place marks in vault and floor and second-place finishes in bars and beam.
In other Prince George results, Emily MacDonald placed fifth in Level 1 tyro. Dallyn Long (Level 1 tyro) also competed in Calgary.
