The strike by city employees from two CUPE locals will mean an early end to this weekend's Prince George Cougars peewee Tier 3 hockey tournament.

After today's games, all arenas in the city will be closed.

But it's not all doom and gloom for the young hockey players from eight teams entered in the tournament.

''None of the teams have canceled and it looks like [Friday's] a go and they'll get two games [each] on Friday," said peewee Cougars coach Rob Millar.

The tournament starts today at 10:15 a.m. at Kin 2 , where Williams Lake plays Dawson Creek. At 10:45 a.m. at Kin 3, Terrace and Vanderhoof will meet on the ice. The host Cougars play Quesnel in their first game at 12:30 p.m. in Kin 2, while at 1 p.m., Smithers faces Fort St. John in Kin 3. Prince George also plays Fort St. John at 5 p.m. in Kin 2.

Barring a miracle in the labour dispute, Saturday's games and Sunday's playoff round will be cancelled.
