Parabadminton on CNC court this weekend

Para-badminton is one of the lesser-known sports for people with mobility disabilities.

Para-badminton is one of the lesser-known sports for people with mobility disabilities.

Public awareness of the sport should grow considerably by the end of this weekend after aspiring players and coaches have attended an introductory learn-to-play clinic sponsored by Shuttle Sport North Central Badminton Academy.

The two-day event at the College of New Caledonia gym features instruction by professional para-badminton coach Lyndon Williams of Edinburgh, Scotland. Athletes are invited to attend the free demonstration Saturday from 1-4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Depending on the level of disability, para-badminton can be played either standing or sitting in a wheelchair. The rules are the same as able-bodied badminton.

The learn-to-coach seminars are scheduled for Saturday, from 9 a.m.-noon (without athletes) and from 1 -4 p.m. (with athletes) and again on Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon (with athletes). Cost of the coaching clinic is $15 for one session, $25 for two sessions and $30 for three.

Beginning in January, the local academy will offer weekly para-badminton sessions. For more information call Lisa Davison, 250-617-5726 or go to www.northcourt.ca.

A free family drop-in and try para-badminton session is set for Sunday from 6:30-8 p.m.
