Panthers strike gold in Quesnel

The Prince George Minor Girls Softball Association sent five teams in four age categories to an invitational tournament in Quesnel last weekend, where they brought back a gold and two bronze medals.

Going undefeated in their three games to claim the gold, the R.H. Jones Mechanical Panthers under-14 development team continued to show improvement each time they took to the field, much to head coach Walter Colk's delight.

"We are off to Vernon this weekend and it should be a true test to see where the girls are with their development against teams across the province," said Colk.

The bronze medal was shared by Team Blue and Team Green in the Prince George under-12 development program. Coach Jess Hudson said they tried to divide the girls up to field two equally competitive teams at the tournament.

Both Prince George teams finished with 2-2 records and shared the bronze medal.

"Our Blue team lost both their games by one run each and our Green team's losses were also very close," said Hudson. "The girls are working hard in practice and have now [experienced] a tournament and really had a lot of fun. We are hoping to build on this for the future."

In the head-to-head game between the Prince George squads Team Blue beat Team Green 16-12, which cost the Green team the gold medal.

The Prince George All-West Glass under-14 Mustangs were hobbled by injuries to key players and were winless (0-3) at their first tournament of the season, but coach Kip Skaar was happy with the fight the girls showed, knowing they can build on it in the future.

The other Prince George team entered in the Quesnel tournament was the under-16 development Angels, which struggled in both their games against Quesnel's under-16 and under-18 teams.
