The R.H. Jones Mechanical Panthers added a silver medal to complete their collection of hardware at a softball tournament in Vernon last weekend.
After lopsided wins over their hosts, Kelowna and Kamloops, the Panthers dropped a 5-4 decision to Penticton in the final round-robin game. In the semifinal the Panthers doubled up Kamloops 8-4 to set up a rematch with the Penticton Power.
Unfortunately the Power were too strong on Sunday for an injury-plagued Panthers squad and the Prince George girls had to settle for the silver medal. The Panthers won gold and bronze medals at previous tournaments, the third-place finish coming when they beat the Power.
The Panthers were awarded the most sportsmanship team of the tournament.
The Panthers are a collection of under-14 players from the Prince George Minor Girls Softball League peewee development program.
T-birds place fifth
In Surrey, the Prince George bantam B Thunderbirds lost their quarterfinal game 3-1 to Cloverdale to finish fifth at the tournament. The T-birds posted a 1-2 record during round-robin play.
