Olympic medalist joins Y Champions festivities

An Olympic medalist is coming to Prince George for the third annual Y Champions Hockey Weekend.

Sami Jo Small, a three-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion with Canada's women's hockey team, will lead the on- and-off-ice sessions at the Canadian Tire School, sharing tips from more than 15 years of experience at the national and international level.

The native of Winnipeg, Man., will share her knowledge at the Sept. 7 school, which is included in the youth registration for the hockey tournament.

The Canadian Tire hockey school was launched in 2010 and comes to Prince George for the first time in September. The school gives young hockey players an opportunity to learn from some of the top players playing today.

After spending her childhood playing in the boy's minor hockey system in Winnipeg, Small attended Stanford University on a track and field scholarship. Injuries halted her track career but led her back to hockey. Small tended goal for the men's hockey team while earning her degree at Stanford, earning PAC-10 MVP honours.

Other events during the Y Champions Weekend include the Bidini Band concert, the adult/youth hockey tournament and the Saturday night banquet with Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole of TSN Sportscentre.

"Our guests will be taking part in the entire weekend," said YMCA CEO Mark Miller. "They are keen to support this fundraiser in any way they can."

Tickets and hockey registration can be purchased at the YMCA on Massey Drive. For more information visit www.pgymca.com.
