Local biathletes Sarah Beaudry, Emily Dickson and Arthur Roots will wear Team Canada colours at the world championships.
The three members of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club secured spots on the national team with their performances at a selection event in Canmore, Alta. Races were held Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.
The championships, for the youth and junior age groups, will take place Jan. 23 to Feb. 2 in Obertilliach, Austria. Beaudry, Dickson and Roots will all compete in the youth category.
Biathlon combines the disciplines of cross-country skiing and target shooting.
Beaudry, 18, won all three of her selection races, the first a sprint event and the other two mass-start events. She clinched the first of four spots on Team Canada and did so despite the fact she was battling an illness throughout the competition. This will be Beaudry's third consecutive appearance at worlds.
Beaudry graduated from Duchess Park secondary school in June of 2012 and has been honing her skills in Canmore at the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre.
Dickson, a Grade 10 student at D.P. Todd secondary, grabbed the final spot on the women's team by finishing third in the sprints and sixth in both of her mass-start races.
Roots, meanwhile, nabbed the last position on the men's squad. The 18-year-old placed third in his sprint race and fifth in his two mass-start events in a competitive, 26-man field.
"Racing among the youth men was extremely tight, with any of the top eight able to qualify going into the last race," said Caledonia's Pierre Beaudry. "Arthur's consistent results earned him a well-deserved spot."
Roots, a D.P. Todd grad, has also been training in Canmore.
Sarah Beaudry, Dickson and Roots will all be eligible to compete in the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George.
