Northland Cougars sweep weekend series

The Northland Dodge female midget triple-A Northern Cougars expected turbulence in their weekend trip to Campbell River, knowing they were taking on the Island Hurricanes on their own turf.

The Northland Dodge female midget triple-A Northern Cougars expected turbulence in their weekend trip to Campbell River, knowing they were taking on the Island Hurricanes on their own turf.

As it turned out, the Northern Cougars downgraded that predicted ice storm in a hurry, winning all three games of their weekend B.C. Female Midget Triple-A Hockey League series.

The Cougars followed up a 2-1 win Friday with a pair of shutout victories the next two games.

Jocelyn Forrest fired the game winner Friday with less than three minutes remaining, after Ava Kies of the Cougars had opened the scoring.

Kelsey Robert slammed the door on the Hurricanes to earn the shutout Saturday. Tessa Hare had the only goal of the game, which came in the second period while the Cats were shorthanded. In Sunday's game, a 2-0 Cougar win, Megan Hickey and Madison Fjellstrom took care of the offence while netminder Avery Quiring picked up her first shutout of the season.

The three wins improved the Cougars' third-place record to 6-2-4. They now have 16 points, which surpasses their best-ever point total in the triple- A league, which formed in 2007. The Hurricanes (3-11-0) remained sixth in the six-team league.

The Cougars will have this weekend off as they prepare for another long roadtrip to Nelson, site of a four-game series Dec. 13-15, where they will take on the Fraser Valley Phantom, West Coast Avalanche, Kelowna Rockets and Kootenay Wildcats.
