Nevada Jones was a menace on the mat.
Jones, who trains at the Prince George Judo Club, battled to a pair of gold medals at the P.G. Open tournament, held this past weekend at Duchess Park secondary school. Jones topped the field in the under-10 category in her weight class and then stepped up to the under-14 division and grabbed first place again.
Three of Jones's clubmates - Elias Dewar, Tami Goto and Sydney Edgson - also finished the P.G. Open as gold medalists. In his weight class, Dewar was victorious in the under-14 group while Goto and Edgson were unstoppable in their respective under-18 divisions.
Other local gold-medal winners included Hart Judo Academy athletes Hayden Prevost (under-14 male), Ethan Boxtart (under-14 male), Andries VanZyl (under-16 male) and Ioan Frizzell (under-16 male).
Silver-medalists in various categories were: Carla VanZyl (HJA); Lily McCullough (PGJC); Oskar Dewar (PGJC); Grayson Holliday (PGJC); Martinus VanZyl (HJA); Corbin Hilman (PGJC); Isaac Kamstra (HJA); Kimiko Kamstra (HJA); Cole Eckert (PGJC); Nick Forester (North Capital Judo Club); and Cody Makowich (NCJC).
Bronze medals, meanwhile, went to: Abigail Desjarlais (HJA); Levi Cartwright (PGJC); Tate Brownridge (PGJC); Ayden Harder (PGJC); Halle Gould (HJA); Linus Frizzell (HJA); Peyton Yon (HJA); Owen Cotter (HJA); Corbin Hilman (PGJC); Gabe Paterson (HJA); Isaac Boxtart (HJA); Brooke Corbett (HJA); Tula Moore (HJA); Davin Greenwood (HJA); and Adrian Rosen (HJA).
Several local judokas have qualified for the Canadian championships and a national training camp, May 16-23 in Calgary.
