Newcomers lead Spruce Kings to victory

New acquisitions key part of Prince George win over Chilliwack

It's always nice when a hockey team makes deals that help, both in the short and long term. Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes acquired forward Sam Kozlowski and goaltender Logan Neaton last week and the impact has been immediate.

Saturday night at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena, Kozlowski scored the  first goal and Neaton made 22 saves as the Spruce Kings defeated the Chiefs 2-1 to sweep the weekend series with Chilliwack. Patrick Cozzi scored the game winner about six minutes into the 3rd while Kevin Wall spoiled Neaton's shutout bid with about five minutes left in the contest.

The first period was sloppy, both teams were cautious. But as the second period started, both teams were skating and there was a great deal of physicality. In the end, the Spruce Kings simply took over the game and outshot Chilliwack 37 to 23.

For his part, goaltender Logan Neaton is grateful to be a Spruce King. "I'm incredibly happy to be here, this is a first-class organization and I'm glad to be playing in this league. Kozlowski for his part is known for an all around game and high hockey IQ. But he scored the first goal of the game and it triggered life into a sluggish Spruce Kings team after the first period.Kozlowski said going to the net resulted in his goal. "There was a scramble in front of the net and there was a rebound and I just buried it."

Head coach Adam Maglio was pleased with how his team elevated their play in the 3rd period but has a minor concern. "We have to address how we start games," he added.

The Spruce Kings return to action this Friday against the Coquitlam Express. Game time at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena is 7pm.
