Morrison stays hot, Hurricanes eliminate Wheat Kings

Prince George born-and-raised Brad Morrison continues to light it up for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the WHL playoffs. He scored two goals Friday in a 3-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings in Lethbridge which eliminated the Wheat Kings in a five-game series. Morrison, who played four year for the Prince George Cougars, now has a staggering 12 goals and and 17 assists in just 10 playoff games.

The 21-year-old Lethbridge Hurricanes winger from Prince George scored two goals in a 3-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night in Lethbridge, a victory that moved the Hurricanes into the Eastern Conference final.

The Hurricanes won the series 4-1 and will await the winner of the Swift Current-Moose Jaw series.

Morrison, the WHL's playoff scoring leader, opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the playoffs, 10:19 into the first period, and iced the victory with an empty-net goal in the dying seconds.

Logan Barlage scored in the second period for Lethbridge, a power-play goal set up by former Prince George Cougars defenceman Tate Olson. Logan Flodell made 32 saves for the shutout.

Now with 12 goals and 17 assists, Morrison has 29 points in just 10 playoff games, averaging 2.9 points per game.

The Prince George minor hockey product played the first four seasons of his WHL career with his hometown Cougars. He was traded in the off-season to the Vancouver Giants for a second-round bantam pick in 2018. Morrison played 42 games for the Giants before he was sent to Lethbridge at the January trade deadline for 20-year-old defenceman Brennan Riddle.

Friday night in Moose Jaw, Stuart Skinner made 36 saves in the Swift Current nets in a 2-0 victory over the Warriors. Kaden Elder and Giorgio Estephen scored the goals. That gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead in the series and a chance to wrap it up tonight in Game 6 in Swift Current.

Game 7, if needed, is scheduled for Monday in Moose Jaw.

The Tri-City Americans are already through to the third round and will play the Everett Silvertips in the Western Conference final. The Americans swept the Victoria Royals in a four-game series. The Silvertips, meanwhile, knocked out the Portland Winterhawks with a 4-0 win Friday night in Game 5.
