Mixed results Saturday for P.G. teams

Western Hockey League Zach Pochiro, Dan Gibb and Klarc Wilson scored as the Prince George Cougars won a road game for the first time since November, defeating the Red Deer Rebels 3-1.

Zach Pochiro, Dan Gibb and Klarc Wilson scored as the Prince George Cougars won a road game for the first time since November, defeating the Red Deer Rebels 3-1. Mac Engel secured the win in the Cougars net turning aside 31 shots. Joel Hamilton gave the Rebels an early 1-0 lead with a power play goal but Pochiro tied the game with his seventh of the season less then two minutes later. Gibb scored the winning goal late in the first period and Wilson potted his first goal as a Cougar into the empty net.

Prince George had only five defencemen for the final 40 minutes as Marc McNulty didn't return to the bench for the second period, having suffered an undisclosed injury.

The Cougars (14-25-2-4) wrap up the three-game road trip through Alberta on Sunday, 3 p.m., in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.

British Columbia Hockey League

For the second straight night the Prince George Spruce Kings played good enough to win but the Chilliwack Chiefs and their goalie Mitch Gillam left the Coliseum with a 4-2 win. Chad Staley and Mark Begert scored for the Spruce Kings who out shot the Chiefs 32-29. The Spruce Kings (19-13-1-6) now trail the Chiefs (26-12-1-1) by nine points for second place in the Mainland division. Prince George has a 0-4-0-1 record against Chilliwack this season but will get another crack at their foe when they travel south for a game Wednesday night in the Fraser Valley.

B.C. Major Midget League

The Cariboo Cougars nabbed their third straight win Saturday when they beat the Greater Vancouver Canadians 3-1 during the BCMML Showcase in Langley.

Braiden Epp, Liam Blackburn and Nick Headrick scored for the Cougars while Nathan Warren was stellar in the Cats' net turning aside 38 shots for his 15th win of the season.

With the win the Cougars have a 22-7 record.

Blackburn had a three-point game and is tied with former Cougar Seb Lloyd for the single-season team record for assists with 37.

The Cougars and Canadians tangle again at the Langley Events Centre on Sunday, 9 a.m.

Canadian Interuniversity Sport - Basketball

In women's basketball action at the Northern Sport Centre the UNBC Timberwolves earned their third straight victory Saturday with an 83-72 win over the Manitoba Bisons. The UNBC men weren't as fortunate, dropping their fourth straight game 90-79 to the visiting Bisons.
