The Cariboo Cougars will finish the regular season with a Giant test.
This weekend, the Cougars will take on the Vancouver Northwest Giants in a B.C. Hockey Major Midget League doubleheader at Kin 1. The G-men are one of the elite teams in the MML. Heading into the games against the Cats, they have a 31-5-2 record and are in a first-place tie with the Okanagan Rockets. The Cougars, meanwhile, are currently in sixth place with a record of 17-19-2.
If the Cougars pull off a couple of upset victories, they could move into fifth place. They'd need two losses out of the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs (18-16-4), who will be in tough against the Rockets this weekend in Kelowna.
If the playoffs started today, the Cats' opening-round opponent would be the Valley West Hawks (25-11-2), who are locked into third place. The Hawks will wrap up their regular season with two road games against the Nanaimo-based North Island Silvertips (12-21-5).
The games against the Giants are Saturday at 4:45 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Giants have the second- and third-ranked scorers in the league in Colton Kerfoot (34 goals, 47 assists, 81 points) and Justin Szeto (25-49-74). This season, Kerfoot has played three games for the Coquitlam Express of the B.C. Hockey League.
Steven Jandric leads the Cougars in scoring and is 13th on the league list with 24 goals and 48 points in 38 games.
