Matheson marvelous in Kelowna

Lauren Matheson legged her way to double gold at the Jack Brow Memorial track and field meet, held in Kelowna on the weekend.

Matheson, who was representing the Prince George Track and Field Club, crossed the finish line in first place in the 100-metre and 200m sprints in her 1999 age group. Her younger brother, Tanner Matheson, also had a shining weekend. In his 2002 age category, he was golden in the 100m sprint, took silver in the 60m race and powered to a bronze medal in the shot put.

The Matheson siblings were just two of the PGTFC athletes who left Kelowna with glittering souvenirs in their luggage.

Other gold-medal winners were: Duncan Elliot (triple jump); Shelby Jansen (300m run); Brian Nemethy (men's 1,500m run); and Simon Nemethy (1,000m run).

Silver medals went to: Emma Balazs (2,000m steeplechase, 1,500m run); Carly Frenkel (triple jump); Ryan Gaiesky (triple jump); Josh Hewitt (800m run); Jansen (100m run, 200m run); Alexander Nemethy (1,200m run, 2,000m run); Simon Nemethy (600m run); David Schroeter (hammer throw); and Luke Winnig (60m hurdles).

Bronze medalists included: Frenkel (hammer throw); Ryan Gaiesky (long jump); Sean Gaiesky (1,200m run); Hewitt (400m run); Lindsay King (shot put); Alexander Nemethy (800m run); and Winnig (60m sprint and 100m sprint).

Other PGTFC members who competed were Alayna Cook, Jillian Hepburn, Shauna Hepburn, Jared Hicks, Zach Matyas, Anika Schroeter, Kirsten Ward, Heidi Winnig and Nathan Winnig.

The meet attracted participants from throughout B.C. and Alberta. A team from Australia also took part.
