Zac Masson’s unassisted goal 4:31 into double-overtime sealed the deal for the Langley Rivermen.
It gave them a 2-1 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings Friday night in front of crowd of 1,086 at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
The win improved the Rivermen’s fourth-place Mainland Division record to 12-14-3-2 and they crept to within five points of the third-place Spruce Kings (15-12-2-2), who picked up a single point for the overtime loss.
Ethan de Jong connected for his third goal of the season to open the scoring for the Spruce Kings 17:50 into the first period, the only shot that beat goalie Bo Didur.
That 1-0 lead stood up until the 4:11 mark of the third, when Langley defenceman McKay Flanagan found a seam behind goalie Tavin Grant.
The first five-minute four-on-four overtime session settled nothing. The Rivermen outshot the Kings 3-1 in overtime and 36-26 in the game.
Prince George defeated the Rivermen 5-3 on Thursday.
The Kings will be on the road next week for night games Friday in Coquitlam, Saturday in Cowichan Valley and a Sunday matinee in Victoria. They’ll get a week off after that for Christmas and then will return home to host Langley again in a two-game set, Dec. 29-30.
