UNBC Timberwolves rookie forward Maria Mongomo considers his options as she runs past Fraser Valley Cascades defender Hailey Kendall during Friday night's CIS Canada West women's basketball matchup at the Northern Sport Centre.

Mongomo, a native of Las Palmas, Spain, was a constant scoring threat while racking up a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds but couldn't prevent an 80-68 loss to the visitors from Abbotsford.

Shayna Cameron shot 21 points, while Taylor Claggett and Kayli Sartori each contributed 17 points for the Cascades, who led 45-38 at halftime and 58-50 after 30 minutes. The win improved the Cascades' record to 3-2.

UNBC remains winless at 0-5. The same teams meet today at 5 p.m. at the NSC.

UNBC men's basketball

In the men's game which followed Friday night on the same court, the Timberwolves posted an 81-74 upset victory over the Cascades to improve to 2-3, handing Fraser Valley (4-1) its first loss of the season.

Trailing 60-57 in the third quarter, guard Billy Cheng led UNBC on a 10-point run with back-to-back threes and a field goal to give the T-wolves the lead, which they held the rest of the game.

Rhys Elliott led the UNBC cause with 23 points, while Cheng finished with 15. Kevon Parchment paced the Cascades with a game-high 25 point

s and 11 rebounds, and Vijay Dhillon sunk 16 points. The Cascades led 44-37 halftime. The men's rematch starts Friday at 7.
