Local rink just misses Games berth

One game was all that stood between Alyssa Connell and her team from competing in their hometown 2015 Canada Winter Games.

One game was all that stood between Alyssa Connell and her team from competing in their hometown 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Connell and her rink from the Prince George Golf and Curling Club posted a stellar 5-1 record at the Canada Winter Games girls qualifier in Vernon last weekend.

Yet Sarah Daniels and her team from Delta did one better, going undefeated with a perfect 6-0 round-robin record to qualify for the 2015 Games in Prince George.

The bonspiel was a seven-team round-robin format with the top team qualifying for the 2015 Games.

The only blemish for Connell's team, which included third Bailey Eberherr, second Jordan Henson, lead Jennilee Slaney and fifth Julianne Slaney came against Daniels in Saturday's Draw 4 in a 5-4 loss.

"The team we lost against won it all," said Connell's coach Wayne Colliss.

"We thought we could win it all, the girls were curling 60, 70 and 80 per cent... the other teams were all good curlers. It's just the way it goes. We're happy how we seeded and we did well."

Connell posted victories against Clare Schmidt's crew from Vernon (7-4); Erin Huitema from Vernon (6-4); Bailey Tinkler from Juan de Fuca (8-5); and Lorelei Guidos from Salmon Arm (12-5). They also defeated Prince George clubmates Carly Connor 10-6.

Connor and her team of third Jessie Withey, second Erin Ross, and lead Carsyn Hamilton posted a 1-5 record.

Their lone win came against Guidos, an 8-5 win on Saturday.

Connell's team won a B.C. Winter Games silver medal last month in February with the same lineup but in different positions.

"We had a good season, with the silver at the [B.C.] Winter Games and we're now done for the year," said Colliss.

"We'll go back, sit down and analyze and see how we can make things better."

Dustin Withey and his PGGCC rink of third Brendan Carswell, second Coleton Vrisendorp, and lead James Brown, lost all five of their games on the boys side in Vernon.

Tyler Tardi Langley of beat Duncan Silversides of Victoria 7-2 to qualify for the 2015 Games.
