Local powerlifter still setting records in his 50s

Prince George powerlifter sets world records every time he lifts at 52 years old.

Mike Webber is 52 years old now and every time he competes he is setting world records.

“I have lifted since I was 13 and I lifted all throughout my teens and 20s,” Webber said. “I got into powerlifting when I was about 28 years old in 1998. I lived in Mackenzie and I trained by myself and I just needed a goal. I’ve always been competitive in my life playing sports and I started powerlifting. I would travel eight hours to go lift in these tiny little towns in Alberta and that’s how it all started for me.”

What keeps Webber going in the powerlifting world after all these years?

“For me it’s the younger lifters here,” Webber said. “I’ve been lifting since the 90s, I’ve had multiple injuries, I have two titanium shoulders, both my knees need to be operated on again, they’ve both been operated on before, tore both biceps off, had them reattached, so I’ve had multiple injuries. I just like training all the younger lifters. It keeps me motivated. I compete against them all the time and it keeps me going and I am inspired to keep lifting.”

During his powerlifting career, Webber has set multiple world records.

“My biggest thing is my squat,” Webber smiled. “My best squat in competition is 960, bench is 667 and deadlift is 716 and now at my age, over 50, it doesn’t matter what I lift, I set a record every time I lift because I’m a little bit stronger than the other lifters and so I am setting world records every time I lift.”
