Carly Shaw-MacLaren is a woman of few words but her actions speak of her success.
The 15-year-old picked up the senior referee of the year honour Saturday during the 2012 Prince George Youth Soccer Association's annual awards banquet and then took to the pitch to ref her first Canadian Interuniversity Sport soccer match Sunday when the UNBC Timberwolves women played host to the Fraser Valley Cascades.
"It was good," said Shaw-MacLaren. "It was like every other game."
The Grade 11 student at Duchess Park secondary received was recommended by B.C. soccer to the CIS officials when they needed a line referee for the T-wolves' game in Prince George. In addition to handling the ref's duties, Shaw-MacLaren also played for the women's PGYSA under-18 Kodiaks this past season and also plays for the DPSS Condors senior girls basketball team.
Other PGYSA award winners were Emily Blagdon, for junior referee of the year, Holly Rake, manager of the year, Rod Auld, volunteer of the year and Rob Martin, president's award.
The soccer boy and girl of the year were Jonathan Richards and Alex Childs.
Richards, a goal keeper with the PGYSA U18 Kodiaks and now one of four keepers with the UNBC men's soccer program, picked up the Terry Wilson Memorial Trophy and a $500 cheque from the PGYSA.
Childs, attending Royal Military College in Kingston, Ont., on a soccer scholarship, kicked her way to the John Da Silva Memorial Trophy and a $500 cheque.
