It was an emotional night when the Duchess Park Condors varsity football team won their fifth consecutive game Oct. 6.
Not only was the 44-19 win over their B.C. high school football league Northern Conference rival, the PGSS Polars - the team that ended the Condors' playoff run last season - but it was the end of an emotional day for the team's coach Mike Rositano.
"My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer about a little over a month ago and the kids have been nothing but supportive," said Rositano. "They brought her a card and flowers."
Rositano's mother was in surgery for a masectomy earlier in the day and his father - also a cancer survivor - was in the stands as the Condors beat the Polars.
"It means the kids care for the coach," said Rositano. "We care for the kids, but it shows that we've earned they're respect as well."
The Condors' leader, on and off the field, Montell Lindgren even sported pink gloves, a towel and shoelaces in support of October being breast cancer awareness month and to emulate his CFL and NFL heroes who are donning pink.
"My grandma's friend did die of breast cancer, but I just found that out today," said Lindgren. "I just want to support it. My coach was wearing a ribbon as well."
