There's $7,500 up for grabs today for 20 professionals entered in the 2018 CPF Canadian Open Pro-Am Powerlifting Championships at Xconditioning gym.

That means $2,500 paydays for the three category winners - women's raw, men's raw, men's equipped - and that's attracted a crowd of lifters from as far away as Manitoba. It's considered the biggest cash meet in Canada in more than 10 years.

"This is the first time we've ever had a cash meet," said meet organizer Jay Cook. "We have lifters coming from Manitoba, Alberta and all over B.C."

Winners are determined using the Wilks Coefficient, a formula which takes into account the individual weight of each lifter and how much they are able to lift.

Each lifter will have three attempts in squat, deadlift and bench press.

The pro meet starts at 10:30 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. On Sunday, 40 amateur lifters in raw and equipped classes are entered in a competition that goes from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Spectators are welcome at the gym (505 Second Ave). Admission is $10 per person. Kids 15-and-under will be admitted free.
