Mackenzie Lewington left quite the pile of records at the bottom of the pool.
Lewington, who trains with the Prince George Barracudas, set five new club standards during a weekend swim meet in Kamloops. In the boys 10-and-under division, he established new records in the 50-metre freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. Two of the old marks -- in the 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke -- were set back in 1990 by Craig Sharp.
Lewington took off the most time in the 200m IM. In that event, he bettered his own record of two minutes 53.83 seconds by touching the wall in a time of 2:49.26.
The Kamloops meet was also a good one for Barracudas swimmer Josiah Binnema. In the 15- to 17-year-old category, he set new club records in four events -- the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly. The previous 50m backstroke record, owned by Robbie Dunbar, had been on the books since 1998. Dunbar's mark was 27.50 seconds and Binnema stopped the clock in 27.11.
Other Barracudas athletes who came home with club records were: Brayden Phillips (boys 10-and-under), 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke; Jackson Girard (boys 11-12), 50m breaststroke; Skylar Lewington (girls 11-12), 400m freestyle; and Hannah Esopenko (girls 13-14), 50m breaststroke.
Notable accomplishments included Binnema qualifying for senior nationals for the first time (200m backstroke) and Jenna Stevens and Matthew Morgan becoming first-time qualifiers for the double-A provincial championships. Both swimmers met the required standard in the 200m IM and 200m backstroke.
The Barracudas, represented by 31 swimmers, finished fourth out of 16 teams.
