So far, so good for the Prince George Spruce Kings.
Two games into their weekend B.C. Hockey League roadtrip the Prince George Spruce Kings have knocked off a couple of the league’s juggernauts.
Saturday night in Penticton, the Kings overcame a 2-0 deficit and scored the next three goals in a 3-2 victory over the first-overall Penticton Vees.
Auston Fraser started the comeback, scoring on a Kings’ power play with nine seconds left in the first period.
Then, after a scoreless second period, Luc Laylin scored the first of his back-to-back goals. The first came at even strength, 1:04 into the third, and the Minnesota native connected on his 12th of the season on another power-play at the 15:50 mark, the gamewinner.
The Vees outshot the Spruce Kings 39-24 but the Kings held a 12-9 in the third period.
Aaron Trotter made 37 saves for his second win of the weekend. He was also the winning goalie with 36 stops in a 3-1 victory Friday in Salmon Arm.
The win extended the Kings’ point streak to 19 games. They haven’t suffered a regulation time loss since Dec. 18, a 2-1 defeat in Vernon.
Prince George improved to 25-9-3-6-0, with a.686 winning percentage, third-best in the BCHL. The Vees (32-7-0-2-0, .805) remain first in the Interior Conference, seven points ahead of the Spruce Kings. The Kings are just five points behind the second-place Salmon Arm Silverbacks (30-7-3-1-0, .780).
They’ll finish off their trip in Vernon Monday afternoon to face the Vipers (2 p.m. start).
