Lally punching in Olympic qualifier

Uruguay's Ruben Casero is the first man standing between Kenny Lally and a spot in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Uruguay's Ruben Casero is the first man standing between Kenny Lally and a spot in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Lally, a 22-year-old local boxer, will fight Casero on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, site of the AIBA American Olympic Qualifying tournament. Lally and Casero are two of 13 boxers in the 52-kilogram weight class. To make Team Canada for the London Olympics, Lally needs a gold or silver medal in Brazil. He'll have to win three bouts to get to the final in the division.

Lally trains at the Inner City Boxing Club, under the guidance of coach Bob Pegues. On Sunday, Pegues said Lally is ready for business.

"He's looking really good," Pegues said. "His head is so into it. He absolutely feels like he's not going to let this chance go."

If Lally wins today, he'll face either Amrit Herrera of Panama or Jeyvier Cintron of Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The semifinals are on Friday and the championship bout is set for Sunday.
