Kenny Lally's quest for a world amateur boxing title begins today in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The 24-year-old Inner City Boxing Club fighter from Prince George is matched against Nicolae Andreiana of Romania in the opening round in the bantamweight (56 kilograms) division at the AIBA elite world championships.
Listed under his given first name, Tanjit, Lally is one of 51 boxers entered in the 56 kg class.
The top-seeded fighter is Robeisy Carrazana of Cuba, the reigning world and Olympic champion. Lally lost a three-round decision to Carrazana in his most recent fight a month ago at the Continental elite championships in Santiago, Chile.
If Lally wins today he will take on eight-seeded Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan in a second-round match on Saturday. Lally would have to win five bouts to advance to the gold-medal match, set for Saturday, Oct. 26.
