Lally gets Team Canada call

For Kenny Lally, the news was straight out of a dream.

For Kenny Lally, the news was straight out of a dream.

Lally, a 20-year-old member of Prince George's Inner City Boxing Club, has been named to Team Canada for the Elite Continental Championships, the first qualifier for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Lally received the news from his coach, Bob Pegues, on Thursday.

"It's overwhelming," said Lally, a three-time Canadian champion who fights at 119 pounds. "I've worked eight years, (won) Prince George titles, B.C. titles and Canadian titles. That all led up to this point. Now it begins. Now my dream is starting to come true."

The Elite Continental Championships, slated for mid-June in Ecuador, will bring together pugilists from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Cuba and other Western Hemisphere nations. Before Lally laces up his gloves in Ecuador, he will attend an international training camp in Puerto Rico. The camp will run from June 7-13.
