It came down to the narrowest of margins Thursday at the Elite Continental boxing championships in Quito, Ecuador, but Lally emerged from the ring with a 2-1 decision over Forestal, part of the Cuban national team.

Lally will take on an opponent from Puerto Rico Friday in the gold-medal match.

Bob Pegues of Inner City, coach of the Canadian team, called Thursday's Lally-Forestal bout a "chess match."

The tournament began on Monday and Lally, who represents the Inner City Boxing Club in Prince George, drew a first-round bye in the 54-kilogram weight division. He advanced to the medal round on Wednesday after earning an 8-1 decision over Alexander Millan of Venezuela.

The 14-country tournament is a qualifier for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. It includes the national teams of Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Bahamas, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Virgin Islands and Venezuela.
