LaBounty rink sweeps to silver at provincials

Gary Cormack stole two points in the final two ends to edge Frank LaBounty 7-6 in the final of the B.C. wheelchair curling championship Sunday in Richmond.

Cormack, the 2006 Paralympic champion, was backed up by 2014 and 2010 Paralympic champ Darryl Neighbour at third, 2006 Paralympic champion Gerry Austgarden at second and lead Samantha Siu.

LaBounty's crew included Allison Duddy from Quesnel, second Vince Miele from Richmond and lead Ellis Tull.

LaBounty, Duddy and Miele won the 2014 B.C. title together.

Sunday, Cormack built a 3-0 lead until LaBounty put up four with the hammer in the fourth end for a 4-3 lead. He stole singles in the fifth and sixth ends, but Cormack scored a deuce in the seventh end before stealing the tying point in the eighth and rolling on to the win.

In Saturday's semifinal, LaBounty defeated Bob MacDonald 7-4. LaBounty scored four points in the second end with hammer and stole a single in the third for a 5-1 lead.

It was a rematch of Saturday's round-robin game where LaBounty defeated MacDonald 11-5. In that one, LaBounty scored a deuce in the first end with the hammer, then stole one in the second, three in the third and three more in the fourth end, as well as one in the fifth end. MacDonald answered with four in the sixth end with the hammer and stole one in the seventh.

LaBounty lost his opening game 10-1 Friday to Cormack.

After LaBounty scored a single with the hammer in the first end, Cormack scored a single with the hammer in the second. He stole five points in the third end and rolled to four more points in the fourth, fifth and six ends before shaking hands in the seventh.

In Friday afternoon's draw, LaBounty shut out Tyler Tingle 16-0 in seven ends.

Cormack and his crew now roll on to the Canadian championship in Boucherville, Que., from April 27 to May 3.
