Kodiaks Red, a 16-and-under girls team, missed a medal by the slimmest of margins at a weekend volleyball tournament in Kelowna.
Kodiaks Red, representing the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club, made it to the bronze-medal match at the Okanagan Super Series. But, with BCO of North Vancouver as their opponent, the Kodiaks lost in three sets, 14-25, 25-10, 16-14.
Kodiaks Red posted a 3-0 record in pool play and then beat Kelowna 25-21, 25-16 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round, the Kodiaks fell 25-22, 25-21 to Kamloops.
Team members are Kaitlyn Seath, Brooke Unger, Nicole Watt, Jamie Kwiatkowski, Riley Novak, Jynessa Kaulback, Megan Warner, Anika Kolybaba, Hayley Marquette, Miranda Nikkel, Ferris Vasko and Hallie Drezet.
Also in Kelowna, the 16U Kodiaks Black girls team finished 13th overall when it beat Vernon 25-20, 25-18 in its final match.
Two local girls teams -- 15U Kodiaks Red and the 15U Kodiaks Black -- were also in action on the weekend. They were on the floor in Burnaby for the Lower Mainland Super Series. In that event, Kodiaks Red placed fourth and Kodiaks Black finished ninth.
The Kodiaks Red team went 2-1 in pool play, defeated SCVC 17-25, 25-23, 15-6 in the quarterfinals and then dropped a 25-15, 25-18 decision to the Coquitlam Ducks in the semifinals. In the bronze-medal match, the Kodiaks took on the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club and lost in three sets, 25-13, 19-25, 15-9. Kodiaks players are Nakita Kovacevik, Kendal Sameulson, Ayden Martin, Sian Steindl, Mackenzie Van Spengen, Alexis Magrath, Haleigh Kearns, Emma Crossan, Kyla Giesbrecht, Hannah Emmond, Ashley Rempel and Chelsea Madsen.
The Kodiaks Black squad secured ninth place in the Tier 2 division thanks to a 25-9, 25-19 victory against the North Shore Stars.
