Kodiaks slam to silver at nationals

The 16-U Kodiaks finished one win shy of gold at the club volleyball nationals, which wrapped up Tuesday in Calgary. The Kodiaks, who were representing the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club, were entered in the Division 2 Tier 1 male category.

The Kodiaks, who were representing the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club, were entered in the Division 2 Tier 1 male category. In the championship match, they fell 25-20, 25-16 to Niagara Rapids Black of Ontario. Overall, the Prince George boys compiled a 7-2 record. Their other loss also came at the hands of Niagara Rapids Black, which beat them 25-22, 25-21 in the final match of the power pool round.

The Kodiaks started nationals with three consecutive victories in pool play. Their wins came against the Eastern Eagles of Newfoundland (25-14, 25-16), ACVC of Alberta (25-14, 25-20) and the Dawson Diggers of the Yukon (25-12, 25-19).

In the power pool, the Kodiaks beat LVC Clutch of Alberta (25-19, 25-18) and B.C.'s Focus Impact (25-9, 23-25, 15-10) before the loss to Niagara Rapids Black.

Next, in the playoff quarterfinals, the Kodiaks downed MAC of Ontario 25-19, 25-19 and sunk the B.C.-based Mariners 25-21, 25-21 in the semis.

Members of the Kodiaks are Jared Apolczer, Jarin Davison, Jonah Gilbert, Nick Hansen, Spencer Jeans, Hunter Posteraro, Nathan Provan, Quin Reimer, Christian Schneider, Ben Shand, Aiden Smith, Nigel Thompson and Graham Walkey. The team is coached by Linden Smith and Erik Minck.

Also at nationals, Kodiaks Black - a 16-U girls squad - ended up tied for fifth place in Division 4. Overall, the team played to a 4-3 record.

The Kodiaks' last match was a quarterfinal contest against the London Fire. London prevailed in three sets (15-12 in the third) and went on to win the gold medal in the division.

The Kodiaks are formed by Lezzyl Aquino, Erin Cole, Emma Crossan, Jenna Froescul, Justine Hamilton, Alexis Magrath, Grace Meehan, Alexx Ntapas, Sian Steindl, Clara Temoin, Micaela Young and Isabel Zimmerman. Coaches are Allan Tong, Karin Young, Mattie Dreher and Alisha Carlson.
