Kodiaks on provincial title quest

Coached by Brad Stewart, the U-16 Kodiaks are to the top seed in their division at the B.C. B-Cup provincial championship, one of eight Prince George Youth Soccer teams in action on the provincial front this weekend in Penticton, Powell River and 100 Mile House. The Kodiaks open at 3 p.m., against the Terrace Kermodes.

In Powell River, the Kodiaks U-13 girls coached by Joanne Wankling and the U-13 boys, with Stewart calling the shots from the sideline, will compete for the first time at the provincial B level. Both teams are ranked fifth. The boys begin their championship quest at 11:30 a.m. against Terrace, while the girls face the Squamish Fireballs in their opener today at 3 p.m.

The U-15 boys, under coach Julius Komlos, will step on the field at 100 Mile House for a 3 p.m. game against Nelson as the seventh seed in an eight-team tournament.

Four other PGYSA teams will be chasing down B.C. titles starting today in Penticton. Seeded fourth, the U-14A boys will face Terrace at 3 p.m., under the direction of coach Gino Quarin. The U-14B girls Kodiaks coached by Rod Auld are seeded sixth and they take on Coquitlam today at 3 p.m.

The U-18 boys Kodiaks coached by Aaron LeBlanc are ranked seventh in their tournament. The U-18 boys are coming off a tournament win last weekend in Bellingham, Wash. They open at 11 a.m. against the Chilliwack Attack.

Also in Penticton, coach Frank Rossi will guide the seventh-seeded U-18 girls Kodiaks. They clash with Surrey United today at 11.

Tournament games consist of two 35-minute halves. All seedings are based on last year's provincial results.

All finals will be played on Sunday.
