Two months of hard work turned golden for the PGYSA under-13 Kodiaks on the weekend in Kelowna.
Peter Brbot and Rob Lewis coached the 14 boys to a 4-0 record at a soccer tournament in sweltering Kelowna on Saturday and Sunday.
"I'm so proud of them they gave it everything they had," said Brbot.
In the final on Sunday, the Kodiaks survived the heat - it was 40 degrees - and outlasted a team from Sherwood Park, Alta., to win 2-1 in the second 10 minutes of overtime. Jacob Sweet beat the Sherwood Park keeper after getting behind the defence for a breakaway.
Tyler Mascemnuik had the other goal for the Kodiaks.
It was the second time Prince George beat Sherwood Park as the two met in the semifinal as well with the Kodiaks blanking their Alberta foes 3-0.
In the first game of the tournament the Kodiaks smoked Merritt 12-0 and then slipped past the always fierce Kelowna 3-1.
"Any time we can beat Kelowna in Kelowna it's the highlight of our year," said Brbot.
Other members of the gold-medal winning team are: Graeme Lewis, Danny Mulony, Kyle Wilkinson, Colburn Pearce, Mason Legare, Gage Melanson, Mathew Ens, Luke Brbot, Landon Kitchen, Hudson Emmons, Michael Raper and Carl Vanderkrats.
