In a pitcher's duel the Prince George bantam single-A Knights held steady until the top of the seventh inning of their opening game at the 2012 B.C. Minor Baseball Association championship in Kamloops.

The Knights fell 3-2 to the host Kamloops squad Thursday, watching as a slim 2-1 lead evaporated in the final inning. Prince George will try to get back on even terms in the tournament today when they meet Aldergrove at 8 a.m.

Dakota Curry went four and two-thirds innings for the Knights on the mound, giving up one run, one hit and striking out five, while Bailey Mcfaul pitched two and one-third innings and gave up five hits. Myles Kazakoff recorded the final two outs for the Knights.

The Knights offence was provided by Koltin Chasse, two-for-two at the plate, and Danny Rockwell, two-for-three with an RBI.

Peewees come up short

It was a strong start but silent finish for the Prince George Lomak Knights in their opening game at the 2012 B.C. Minor Baseball Association double-A provincial championship in Chilliwack.

The peewee Knights put up four runs in the first inning but couldn't sustain the output, falling 6-4 to the Rutland Rockies on Thursday.

Devin Sutton and Cole Schwing contributed to the early production by smacking doubles in the first inning, but the Rockies erased the 4-0 deficit by scoring once in the second inning and three times in the fourth inning, before adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Another factor in the Knights' loss was a stellar effort by the Rockies' pitching staff who notched seven strikeouts.

Schwing started on the mound for the Knights, pitching four innings before being relieved by Dustin Aldana, who took the loss. Cole Beacom finished the game for the Knights, striking out four of the final five batters he faced.

The Knights had opportunities to tie the game but were unable to.

In the fifth inning Michael Taylor hit a double but was thrown out when he attempted to turn it into a triple, while the Knights had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh when the final out was recorded.

Sutton was named player of the game for Prince George.

Today the Knights are up to bat twice, starting at 9 a.m. against the Ladner Red Sox followed by a 3 p.m. game with the Nanaimo Pirates. Jarin Sutton is expected to start for the Knights on the mound against Ladner.
