Knights prevail after lengthy delay

Prince George improves to 1-1 at B.C. Minor Baseball double-A midget provincials

The protest lasted 40 minutes and sent one coach to the showers.

And by that time, most of the crowd followed suit, heading for exits.

But in the end it didn't matter to the Prince George IDL Knights.

They still found a way to beat the Ridge Meadows Royals.

The Knights scored six runs in the second inning to defeat the visitors 13-6 Thursday night at Citizen Field.

The win left the Knights with a 1-1 record at the 10-team B.C. Minor midget double provincial championship.

Aaron Antonenko and Keefer Zohner each hit solo home runs to lead the Knights offensively.

Johnson's came in the first inning to get Prince George on the board after falling behind 3-0 to the Royals. Zohner cleared the wall in the third inning.

A collision at first base in the fourth inning created an argument between the umpires and Prince George coach Derek Knight, and Knight was eventually tossed from the game.

Knights pitchers Dylan Johnson, Reg Barry and Taylor Callander combined for the win.

The Knights dropped their opener Thursday afternoon 7-3 to the Victoria Wolves.

In that game, with the teams tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Brandon Masse started a four-run inning with a lead-off single to right field and advanced to third on a throwing error. Sam Wright followed suit with an infield hit to score Masse. Stefan deMontmorency singled in another run and Shane Gallagher clubbed a base hit that brought two more Wolves home.

Garrett Belanger lasted six innings but he didn't get much help from the rest of the Knights on defence. Prince George made four errors in the sixth.

"We just made little errors, the boys were a bit nervous and tried to do a bit too much instead of trying to keep it simple," said Knights head coach Randy Potskin. "They got some unlucky hits, some infield bloopers and we just couldn't get involved for some reason.

"We know we can play better. We just have to play to our ability and we'll be fine. Garrett gave us the chance we needed, we just didn't execute."

Dylan Johnson tied the game 2-2 in the second inning and the Knights built a 3-2 lead in their half of the third inning after a base hit from Aaron Antonenko.

"It was looking good for awhile there," said Potskin.

Masse picked up the win for Victoria.

In other tournament results Thursday, the Ridge Meadows Royals needed 10 innings to beat Vancouver 5-4. Sean Dorey's single in the bottom of the 10th brought Kevin Bork home with the winning run off pitcher Ryan Holloway. Kyle Whyte earned the victory, pitching five hitless innings while striking out six.

Also on opening day, Richmond dumped Ladner 11-5, Gibsons thumped Rutland 13-0: Surrey stopped Vancouver 9-4; and Richmond improved to 2-0 with an 11-1 win over Cloverdale.

The Knights face Vancouver today at noon at Citizen Field, followed by a 6 p.m. game against Surrey. The tournament resumes today at 9 a.m. with Victoria taking on Surrey at Citizen Field, while Rutland plays Colverdale at Rotary Field.

Playoff semifinals are set for Sunday at 9 a.m. at both fields, with the final scheduled for 1 p.m. at Citizen Field
