A storm blew through Prince George on Friday afternoon but before it hit the Prince George IDL Midget Knights wrecked some havoc of their own.
The Knights romped over the Ridge Meadows Royals 12-1 at Rotary Field in a battle between undefeated teams in Pool B of the 2012 B.C. Minor Midget double-A tournament. The win clinched first place in the pool for the Knights (3-0) and puts them into Sunday's semifinal against the second-place team in Pool A.
The Knights have out scored their opponents 34-5 in three games while the in Pool A the Tsawwassen A's have a runs for/against ratio of 37-8.
Knights coach Tim Knoop said the perfect record is nice but the job isn't finished.
"I'm pretty proud of the team, but we still have a lot of work to do," said Knoop. "We'll enjoy the wins now but we've got three more games to win."
The final round-robin game against the Victoria Wolves (0-2) was delayed by the thundershower and will be played today, 10:30 a.m. at Citizen Field.
Today's game between the Royals (2-1) and the Cloverdale Spurs (1-2) will determine the final playoff team from Pool B. If the Royals win they clinch a semifinal berth.
In Pool A things are murkier then the puddles on the infield. The A's lead the way with a 3-0 record. The A's would wrap up first place with a win in their final round-robin contest over the Duncan Nationals (1-1). The A's and Nationals will play their rescheduled game today, 8 a.m., on Citizen Field.
When the lightning show began Friday the Tri City Cubs (0-2) were holding a slim 5-4 lead over Ladner (0-2) in the top of the fourth inning as the Pool A teams searched for their first win. On Rotary Field, the Vancouver Community Mounties (0-2) and the Spurs (1-2) were also in the fourth inning when the rain hit.
The condition of the fields were the biggest concern after the rain delay. After a four-hour delay Ladner and Tri City resumed their game on Citizen Field, but Rotary Field wasn't deemed safe for the players. The Pool B game was to resume on Citizen Field after the conclusion of the first game.
The skills competition, slated for today, 3 p.m., was turfed in order to accommodate the new schedule.
