Kids triathletes praying for sun

The kids are alright.

The kids are alright.

Pete Townshend, the lead guitarist for The Who, wasn't thinking about the Prince George Credit Union Kids Fun Triathlon when he wrote that hit tune in the sixties, but it could well apply to the kids who take part in Sunday's 17th annual race.

After a soggy and cool first month of summer, they will certainly be alright if the sun shines on their event Sunday morning. It just makes it a lot more fun if it's warm and bright for the race.

"I was worried [about the weather] but I don't see any lightning bolts in the picture so we should be OK," said race organizer Nicole Callaway. "Everything is coming together really well."

The triathlon starts at 9 a.m. Sunday with the swim leg at Four Seasons Pool. After a quick transition, the kids will hop on their bikes for a ride to Fort George Park, where the running course will be set up.

Distances for the race depend on the age of the competitors. The youngest age group -- 6-8-year-olds -- will swim 50 metres, ride four kilometres and run one km. The 9-10-year-olds swim 100m, ride 4km and run 1km; while the oldest group, the 11-15-year-old crowd, are in the water for 100m, on the bike for 8km, and run 2km.

A total of 89 racers are signed up for the event, up from last year's 78 total.

"We have a large group of Harwin elementary students and a lot of them are new to the sport," said Callaway. "It's really neat to see a high number of those students participating."
