Jujhar Khaira is one step closer to playing in the National Hockey League.
The former Prince George Spruce Kings forward signed a three-year entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, forfeiting his NCAA scholarship at Michigan Tech. The 19-year-old will attend the Oilers training camp, but it's expected he will either be sent to play for the Oklahoma City Barons, the Oilers affiliate American Hockey League team, or he could wind up playing major junior hockey with the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League.
The Silvertips acquired Kharia's WHL playing rights during the 2012 WHL bantam draft in a trade with the Prince George Cougars.
The Surrey native played two seasons in the B.C. Hockey League with the Spruce Kings, accumulating 39 goals and 82 assists in 112 games. As a rookie with the NCAA Division 1 Michigan Tech Huskies, Khaira had six goals and 19 assists in 37 games.
Khaira was drafted 63rd overall (third round) by the Oilers at the 2012 NHL entry draft.
