For 87 years, dating back to its time as the Prince George men's bonspiel, the Kelly Cup has been the showcase men's curling event at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.
Known as one of the physically largest trophies in the sport curling, the 42-inch treasure will not be awarded this year. The 88th Kelly Cup has been cancelled.
Plummeting participation in the local club's men's leagues and the timing of the Kelly Cup, scheduled for March 27-30, which falls during the second week of Spring Break for school kids, left the organizing committee with very few volunteers to organize the event. PGGCC president Dan Martin also said the club's organizational resources were drained when it hosted the B.C. Scotties Tournament of Hearts women's provincial championship in January.
Martin expects this is a temporary glitch and the club will go ahead with plans to host the Kelly Cup again in 2015.
