The first time Michael Dahms, Chris Calder, J.T. Blanchett and Matt Gyorfi took to the ice together as a team, they went out and won the Kelly Cup.
That was in 2010. In 2011 they lost in the final, and they didn't compete in 2012.
Not bad for a group of guys in their mid- to late-20s who prior to 2010 had either played together or against each other.
They're back at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club this weekend competing in the 88th Kelly Cup bonspiel.
"Prestige is part of it," said Dahms, the team's skip. "It was probably once the most prestigious tournament in B.C. For us, it's the pinnacle of the season that we work towards.
"But it's also the camaraderie. I've been playing with Matt since we were 14, J.T. and Chris have played together and I've even coached Chris."
It's not like they hadn't tossed stones in the PGGCC's biggest men's bonspiel before teaming up together in 2010. Dahms has competed in it since 2002; Blanchett, the team's second, has played in it since 1997, while it will be lead Gyorfi's third time.
The Kelly Cup is something they look forward to every year since they don't all live within the same postal code like they used to.
For the last four years, Dahms has lived in Edmonton where he works in Finning's office. Gyorfi is completing his commerce degree at UBC.
Only Calder and Blanchett have remained in Prince George. Calder, the team's third, is a chartered accountant at KPMG, while Blanchett is a plumber/gas fitter for Canuck Mechanical.
Even though they're apart for the majority of the season, it doesn't seem to affect their on-ice chemistry.
"We never drop a beat, we've played together enough times," said Dahms. "We just step onto the ice with each other, know our ability and know what kind of shots that can be made."
"We're all just four pieces of a puzzle," added Blanchett. "Every one of us is different, but the camaraderie is so good. I wouldn't want to play with anyone else."
This season the team also won the Quesnel cashspiel and the C event in the Logger's Men's Bonspiel in Smithers.
As of Friday afternoon Dahms was still in contention for the Kelly Cup on the B side.
The A and B finals are today at 2:15 p.m. while the Kelly Cup final is set for 3 p.m. Sunday.
The 20-team PGGCC ladies bonspiel began Friday night. Action continues today and the final is at 3 p.m. Sunday.
