A dozen high-powered trucks are about to tear up the track at PGARA Speedway Park.

The SuperTruck Racing Series will be in town for the season-opener Saturday at the Prince George Auto Racing Association's race track.

"They're late-model series trucks - 2014 Dodges, Toyotas and Fords with full-blown engines," said PGARA president Chris Arronge. "They run on 15-inch tires, they're like a late-model race car."

The 12 SuperTrucks, featuring drivers from Alberta, Saskatchewan and B.C., including former Prince George resident Darren Guillet, will most likely clock 16-second lap times in the 100-lap main event Saturday.

The SuperTruck Racing Series is based in Saskatoon and holds most of its events there. Prince George and Hythe, Alta., are the only other places the SuperTrucks will run in 2014.

It's their first-ever appearance in Prince George.

Besides the SuperTrucks, opening night includes the Inland Kenworth hornets, Chieftain Auto Parts mini stocks and Richmond Steel street stocks, all racing for double points.

Arronge started last year to bring the SuperTrucks to the city after he saw them race a few years ago in Vernon.

This weekend was the only time that worked for the series, a perfect fit for opening weekend.

Auto racing fans who want to see their power can attend practice Friday at 7 p.m. (admission is free), or get an up-close and personal view of them Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Mr. Quick Lube & Oil and Chieftain Auto Parts.

Saturday night, qualifying begins at 6, followed by racing at 7. There is also racing Sunday afternoon.

The entire show is sponsored by Mr. Quick Lube & Oil and White Spruce Enterprises.

Admission is $20 for adults; $15 for kids ages 12 to 18; $5 for kids ages six to 11 and seniors. Kids under five are free.

During the off-season, PGARA has renovated its bleachers, replacing the boards as well as building an entire wall and fence on the straight-away.

Other events on the slate this season at PGARA include the American Speed Association Show on June 14 and the always popular Hit to Pass Extravaganza on June 21.
