Two local judo athletes are about to test their talents against international opposition.
Kimiko Kamstra of the Hart Judo Academy and Tami Goto of the Prince George Judo Club were on a plane Tuesday, bound for Cordoba, Argentina, site of the Cadet and Junior Pan Am Championships. The event starts on Friday and wraps up the next day.
As members of the Canadian contingent, Kamstra will be on the mat in the cadet and junior categories (minus 44-kilogram weight class) and Goto will compete in the cadet minus 48kg division.
Earlier this season, Kamstra was a national gold-medalist in her weight class in the Under-21 women's division and took silver in Under-18. Goto, meanwhile, won a bronze medal in the Under-16 group. Nationals were held in Calgary in May.
Both athletes were in the Under-18 age group at the Canada Cup in Montreal this past weekend. Kamstra was golden in the minus 44kg division and Goto earned silver.
Other local medalists in Montreal were: Sydney Edgson (gold), U-16 minus 63kg; Brooke Corbett (bronze), U-18 minus 48kg; and Gabe Paterson (bronze), U-16, minus 55kg.
