The Prince George Kodiaks held off the defending B.C. Football Conference champions for a full quarter of Saturday’s game in Langford.
They kept the Westshore Rebels scoreless into the second quarter before eventually falling 45-25 in front of a crowd of about 2,000 at Starlight Stadium.
The Rebels (2-0) scored 28 points in the second quarter to pull ahead 28-11.
After Linden Williams gave the Rebels a 7-4 lead, Kodiaks kick returner Myron Brown ran the ensuing kickoff into the length of the field into the end zone to restore the Prince George lead.
Back-to-back rushing touchdowns from Carter Wiliams gave the Rebels some breathing space heading into the halftime intermission.
The Rebels kept up the momentum to start the third quarter when linebacker Fermani Okunola picked off a Sawyer Thiessen pass and ran it in for a pick-six to add to the Westshore lead.
Carson Briere hauled in Thiessen pass for his third touchdown of the season from about 10 yards out and Thiessen ran in a bootleg for another Prince George major in the second half.
The Kodiaks will be back on the road this weekend to visit the Langley Rams on Saturday.
Ethan Ready will provide the play-by-play behind the mic on Country 97 FM, starting at 4 p.m.
The Kodiaks will be back on home turf Saturday, Aug. 10 to face the Valley Huskers of Chilliwack.
