Judokas shine on home turf

The North Capital Judo Club had a large contingent spar on their home mats at the Prince George Open Saturday at the Northern Sport Centre.

The North Capital Judo Club had a large contingent spar on their home mats at the Prince George Open Saturday at the Northern Sport Centre.

The club was among nine in the region - with a total of 140 athletes - that competed in the one-day tournament.

Three boys competed in the skills competition, directed at younger and more novice athletes, where they demonstrated their best throws, hold-downs and escapes. They included Johnny Price, 6, Keale Johnson, 7, and Liam Quinlan, 9.

Taking home gold medals were: Garrett Sakamoto (under-8 novice boys, under-24-kilogram division), Jonah Macfarlane (U16 novice boys, under-60kg division), Gabe Sakamoto (U10 boys, under-27kg,) Lochlan Young (U14 boys, under-50kg), Maxwell Young (U16/U18 boys, under-46kg) and Nicolas Richards (U16/U18 boys, under-66kg).

Winning silver medals were: Xander Witton (U10 novice boys, under-30kg), Maddy Novak (U14 novice girls, under-38kg), Asher Young (U12 boys, under-35kg), Luka Tiani (U12 boys, under-50kg), and Sarah Ablett in senior women's open.

Five NCJC athletes won bronze medals. They included: Aiden Crocetta (U12 novice boys, under-35kg), Raphael Encinas (U10 boys, under-27kg), Miles Wood (U12 boys, under-50kg), Nathan Gauthier (U14 boys, under-46kg) and Michelle Barnes in senior women's open.

Braeden Davis placed fourth in the U16 and U18 boys under-66kg division, while Alex Price finished fifth in the senior men's heavyweights.

Besides those from the three Prince George clubs - North Capital Judo, Hart Judo Academy and Prince George Judo - other clubs that competed were from Williams Lake, Dawson Creek, Smithers, Grande Prairie, Kokoro (100 Mile House), Dawson Creek and Victoria.
